A Lai is a very old French poetry form. It looks to be simple, comprising of a five syllabled couplet followed by a two syllable line. The number of lines in each stanza is fixed at 9 and the coupltets must rhyme with each other as must the two syllable lines. Speaking for myself, as a person completely uninitiated in the formal study of English literature/poetry, this entire exploration of poetry forms has been an interesting and challenging journey. This one, particularly, was not easy to come up with. So let’s me know if it makes sense to you!
Restless is the night
not a God in sight
heartless
birds rising in fright
surprised into flight
worthless
eyes turn to the light
God’s love fierce white
warmthless.
